Mac Podcasters Meetup At Macworld - OnlineMediaTips.com

Just a note to say that Adam Christianson put together one of the best events at last year’s Macworld Expo called the Mac Podcasters Meetup. I’m proud to announce that I’ve been asked to be part of the permanent panel at this event again this year. It’s held at Jillians near Moscone. For more information visit the MacMeet&Mingle page.

Watch Your Mouth. Those F-Bombs Could Cost You!

Post by Lee Gibbons

Podcasting and online broadcasting is, of course, free from FCC Rules prohibiting on-air obscenity, indecency, and profanity. This certainly opens up the vocabulary, and some podcasters relish the license (or lack thereof) that this affords them.

The problem is that most sponsors of new media are very sensitive to the content of the shows they will sponsor. As a matter of fact, while there are certainly exceptions, most brands want nothing to do with content that:

• Is political in nature
• Uses profane or foul language
• Is highly argumentative
• Has religious leanings
• Is sexually explicit

This list was emailed to me today. It’s origin is that of one of the ad networks that Podango is tied into, that fields RFPs from major ad agencies. This is their guideline to us for shows that they will pitch on our behalf.

The message here should be clear: If you hope to garner sponsorship dollars, you had better not only comply with typical FCC rules, but also think about making sure your content is ‘brand friendly,’ too.

ADM Election Results - OnlineMediaTips.com

The Association for Downloadable Media held its election recently and surprise, surprise, Susan Bratton won her seat as vice chair. And here’s another surprise (not!) - the ADM made a rule that automatically promotes the vice chair to chairperson the following year. So in effect, this will be pretty much Susan’s organization for the next 24 months.

I have little hope that the ADM will end up representing the best interests of most podcasters. But what hope I do have stems from the fact that several very good and talented people with actual podcasting and broadcasting backgrounds were added to the board of advisors. Nobody knows how much Susan will listen to these advisors, so their impact may or may not be minimal. In any event, it’s clear to me that we still need an organization that represents not just those selling downloads, but all new media producers.

I am working with others who feel like the ADM is a lost cause to join an existing new media organization founded by Rick Calvert from Blogworld & New Media Expo. If that doesn’t pan out, we’ll move forward with our own organization.

Stand by for more information as it becomes available.

As far as the ADM goes, well I certainly wish them well and hope that they listen to the membership and try to advance an agenda that represents and benefits all new media producers, not just the leaders of the ADM.
