The Problem With Online Video - PodcastingTricks.com

While video blogging, podcasting, webcasting and netcasting is ever more popular, all is not perfect. Some of the same problems that plague traditional media impact online video.

According to a February, 2007 study by Synovate/Clipblast!, nearly one third of online video podcast/webcasts and netcasts thought there were too many ads in online content. One in five complained that it’s too hard to find quality production. The same number found that they couldn’t locate content that matched their interests.

If the video side of our industry is going to succeed, it needs to pay attention to surveys like this one and do everything possible to make sure that people’s needs are being met. Otherwise, we’ll just be disintermediated like those who came before us.

Seth Godin is a marketing guru. You probably know his books. About half the time, I find him to be the guy who brings up more questions than answers. But the other half, well that’s why I read his stuff.

There was a quote from Seth in a recent interview with Guy Kawasaki, that I want to share…

“It’s easy to record and print a CD and hard to make a hit. Easy to write a book and hard to make it a bestseller. Easy to build a website and hard to create a viral success.”

Blogworld & New Media Expo - PodcastingTricks.com

I’m very excited to announce that I have been asked to be a featured speaker at the Blogworld & New Media Expo in Las Vegas, NV - November 8-9, 2007.

If you are currently blogging, vlogging, podcasting, producing some other form of new media content, thinking about joining this industry or just want to know what this whole blogging and podcasting phenomena is all about, then you need to be at BlogWorld.

And yes, technically, this show is competition for The Podcast & New Media Expo. And that’s good. Competition is always good. And I have decided to throw my support behind both shows. Each will be slightly different and the regional factor will be important. Most trade shows are far more local than many people realize. Blogworld & New Media Expo will draw a different audience than the Podcast & New Media Expo because Vegas is much easier for some people to get to than Orange County. That translates to new people, new opportunities and a new approach.

I’ll have more information here in the coming weeks on the podcasting track at this new show so stay tuned.

The Center for Media Research says Arbitron and Edison Media Research have teamed up to do a survey of how people interact with and use digital audio.

For all of you who think radio is dead, think again. It’s second only to mobile phones. The most impressive radio stat is that people spend an average of more than two and one half hours a day listening to radio.

But more importantly to those of us who produce podcasts, there is some encouraging news. According to the survey, awareness of podcasting has jumped from 22 percent in 2006 to 37 percent in 2007. That trend could signal the end to the current plateau in audience that many of us have experienced.
